Is Diabetes Really Reversible?

Type 2 diabetes is a dangerous disease that, if left unchecked, can lead to many other serious health conditions such as kidney disease, blindness, leg and food amputations, and nerve damage.

According to the 2017 National Diabetes Statistics Report, over 30 million people in America are currently living with type 2 diabetes. To put that into perspective, that’s nearly 10% of the entire population.

It is also worth mentioning that diabetes is the 7th leading cause of death in the United States, responsible for over 250,000 deaths in the year 2015 alone.

Perhaps the saddest bit of information is that type 2 diabetes is entirely preventable. Considered a lifestyle disease, type 2 diabetes is the result of poor eating habits and a lack of exercise.

When a person eats too much sugary and fatty foods, they pack on extra pounds. This extra weight can cause insulin resistance, particularly if the extra weight is around your midsection.

When your body becomes insulin resistant, it cannot use insulin properly. And insulin is the hormone responsible for how your body utilizes glucose. If your body can’t use insulin properly, the glucose levels rise in your blood. And consistently high blood glucose levels lead to those health risks I mentioned up top, like kidney disease, nerve damage and amputation.

Now the great thing about lifestyle diseases like type 2 diabetes is, not only are they preventable, they are also totally reversible. How do you reverse type 2 diabetes? By reversing the lifestyle choices you made to get the disease.

Here are some ways you can reverse your type 2 diabetes naturally:

Clean Up Your Diet

Certain food groups are the main culprit for the development and persistence of diabetes. These foods not only effect your blood sugar levels, they can also cause inflammation and trigger immune responses.  If you want to reverse your type 2 diabetes, your very first step MUST BE to eliminate these foods from your diet:

  • Refined sugar: Think sodas, fruit juices, cakes, candies, pies and other obvious sweets. But also think about not-so-obvious sweets like breakfast cereals, sweet fruity yogurts and granola bars. When refined sugar enters the bloodstream, it rapidly spikes your blood glucose levels. You may think natural sweeteners like raw honey and maple syrup are okay, and they may be for non-diabetics, but you should very much limit your intake of these as well.
  • Grains: We have been told for years that whole grains are our friends, but that is a topic worth debating. Suffice it to say, all grains contain large amounts of carbohydrates that are broken down into simple sugars and, you guessed it, spike your blood sugar. Your best bet is to remove all grains from your diet.
  • Alcohol: Alcohol can dangerously increase blood sugar and lead to liver toxicity. Beer and sweet liquors are especially high in carbohydrates and should be avoided.
  • Hydrogenated oils: Natural oils like olive oil and coconut oil are excellent for your health, but oil that was made in a lab, which is where hydrogenated oils like vegetable oil, soybean oil and canola oil are made, have been linked to many health risks, including the development of diabetes.

Once you remove the junk from your diet, replace it with whole foods like fish, beef, chicken, whole dairy, eggs, some low glycemic fruits like berries and cantaloupe and vegetables. Here’s your rule of thumb, if man made it, and if it comes in a box or crinkly wrapper – DON’T eat it!

Exercise Regularly

Studies have repeatedly shown that exercise can improve blood glucose control and can prevent and reverse type 2 diabetes. As major added bonuses, exercise can positively impact your blood pressure, heart health, cholesterol levels and overall quality of life.

Exercise also plays a key in role in supporting your metabolism by burning fat and building lean muscle at the same time. If you want to reverse your type 2 diabetes, your second step after cleaning up your diet MUST BE to make exercise a regular part of your life.

The good news is, you don’t need to become a gym rat to turn your health around, you simply have to move your body consistently. Just getting outside and walking every day for a half hour is a terrific start to a new workout plan. Yoga is also a great form of exercise, and don’t forget to lift heavy stuff a couple of times a week.

Use Diabetic Supplements

There are many natural supplements that can help you control your blood glucose and reverse your diabetes.

Chromium Picolinate

Talk to your healthcare provider about adding 200 micrograms of chromium picolinate with each meal to help improve your insulin sensitivity. Studies have shown CP can significantly improve glycemic control and substantial reductions in hyperglycemia and hyperinsulinemia. Other studies found CP reduced cholesterol and triglyceride levels and reduced the need for hypoglycemic medication.

Cinnamon

Cinnamon not only tastes great, it has also been found to lower blood sugar levels. Now that doesn’t mean you should start eating a bunch of sugary cinnamon-flavored cereals, but you should speak to your doctor about adding a cinnamon supplement to your diet.

Fish Oil

Research published in the Journal of Research in Medical Sciences shows that omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil are necessary for proper insulin function, preventing insulin intolerance and reducing inflammation. (Editor’s note: If you need a fish oil supplement that is pure, potent and won’t leave you with those nasty fish burps, try Primal Labs’ DuOmega, with omega-3 AND omega-7!)

Final Thoughts

There is no denying that type 2 diabetes negatively impacts a person’s life and, if left unchecked, can lead to worse health risks and even death. But the fantastic news is, you DON’T HAVE TO LIVE WITH DIABETES ANY LONGER.
