7 Reasons Why We Should All be Eating More Sardines

Are you someone who loves a nice piece of salmon or cod? Do you often have tuna fish sandwiches or crab salad for lunch? Well what if I told you you were ignoring a fish that provides a ton of essential nutrients?

While they may be tiny, sardines offer BIG health benefits. After reading this blog post you’ll definitely want to start eating more. Let’s dive in!

1. Anti-inflammatory Properties

Sardines are a cold-water fish that are loaded with omega-3 fatty acid. If you’ve read this blog for any length of time, you know that inflammation is the root cause of most diseases including heart disease, arthritis and even cancer. By adding more omega-3 rich foods to your diet, you’re helping your body fight serious and even deadly diseases.

2. Better Mood and Energy

Sardines also have high levels of important vitamin B-12. This vitamin is known for boosting your energy, so you don’t feel fatigued throughout the day. There have also been studies that show vitamin b-12 can reduce an individual’s risk of developing depression. Other studies have shown those that already suffer depression can significantly lower their symptoms by upping their vitamin B-12.

3. Regulates Natural Insulin Levels

Sardines contain very high levels of vitamin D, and this vitamin (which is really a hormone) benefits pretty much your entire body. But diabetics will be happy to know that vitamin D plays a major role in regulating your body’s natural insulin levels.

4. Healthy Teeth and Bones

Did you know that sardines are very high in calcium? This is great news for those people who are lactose intolerant. But even more than that, since sardines also have high amounts of vitamin D, it means all of that calcium will actually get into your teeth and bones, instead of into your soft tissue like joints and arteries.

If you are “of a certain age” it’s important to get enough calcium in your diet to protect against osteoporosis. Consider eating more sardines to keep your bones nice and strong.

5. Helps Your Red Blood Cell Count

Yet another important nutrient that sardines are loaded with is iron. The most notable health benefit of iron is its role in helping your body make red blood cells. Those with too little iron in their diets become anemic, which means they don’t have enough red blood cells. Anemic people tend to be cold often, have wild mood swings and anxiety and very little physical energy.

If you believe you are anemic, you should definitely speak with your doctor and have a blood test done. If it is confirmed, then consider getting more iron into your diet through sardines.

6. Magnesium

Another important nutrient that helps make sure the calcium you ingest goes into your bones and teeth instead of into your soft tissues is magnesium. But beyond bone and teeth health, magnesium has also been shown to help calm and relieve anxiety. If you have trouble sleeping at night, you may want to include sardines at dinner or a late-night snack to help you calm down.

7. Helps Fight High Blood Pressure

Finally, sardines are an excellent source of potassium. Bananas always get all of the potassium glory, but there are other fantastic sources, one of them being sardines.

Why is potassium so important? Because it is what helps keep your blood pressure nice and low. Too much focus has been given to sodium and how much we eat of this white stuff. The truth is, our bodies need sodium, and good amounts to function properly.

The real problem is not that we eat too much sodium, but that our sodium and potassium ratio is out of whack. Wouldn’t you rather use a natural solution to lowering your blood pressure than take a prescription medication that comes with nasty side effects?  If so, then you will want to begin consuming more potassium-rich foods, and sardines are an excellent choice.

One more benefit of getting more potassium into your diet is it slows the degeneration of muscle mass. This is important as we age, because we tend to lose more muscle with each passing year. A lack of muscle on our bodies not only makes us weaker and our bones more brittle, it also makes it easy for us to gain weight. You see, muscle mass burns more calories, even when our bodies are at rest. So young people have such great metabolisms because they have terrific muscle mass. But as we age we lose a good deal of muscle, our metabolism slows, and we more easily pack on the pounds.

So sardines can help you lower your blood pressure AND help you battle the bulge.

If, when you walk down the canned fish aisle, you pass by those shiny silver cans of sardines, it’s time to stop and load some into your cart. Your health will thank you!
