If you’re like a lot of people, you’re constantly trying a new diet in an effort to finally lose weight. If you’re also like a lot of people, you haven’t seen much success, and so you give up only to try another diet a few months later.

Let’s face it, there are a TON of diets out there already, with new diet fads cropping up each month it seems. There’s the South Beach Diet, Atkins Diet, Mediterranean Diet, Lose 21 Pounds in 21 Days diet and on and on. With so many options, how do you know which one will be right for you?

Here are some things to consider when selecting a diet plan to help you lose weight:

  1. Will it Be One You Can Stick With?

It really doesn’t matter how scientifically sound a weight loss program is or how popular or effective it has been for others. What really matters is, is it a diet that you can stick with for the long-term?

Yo-yo dieting not only doesn’t work, it can be dangerous. So it’s important that you choose a plan that is not intended for a short, quick loss of 5-7 pounds but an eating plan that you can actually follow forever. Is it healthy enough and can you see yourself enjoying that eating plan for a long time?

  1. Is it Practical?

Everyone is different. While some people can easily eat only one meal a day (intermittent fasting and OMAD), others have to eat at least 3 meals a day or they don’t feel good. If a plan calls for you to eat 6 smaller meals a day and you have a hard time eating 3, then that particular plan simply won’t work for you. While losing weight will require you to make changes to your lifestyle, you as a person will only be able to change so much, especially at the very beginning, so find a plan that is practical for you.

  1. Does it Include Foods You Can Afford, Easily Prepare and Actually Like?

If you are a busy mom with 5 children, it may not be practical for you to select a diet that is going to cost you a lot more at the grocery store or one that is going to require you to spend countless hours in the kitchen preparing your meals.

You’ve got to make sure that the diet you select is one that is affordable on your current budget and is doable for you with your current schedule. Also, you’ve got to be able to enjoy the food you eat, or you’ll never stick with it. If the plan requires you to replace one of your meals each day with a large glass of fresh green juice, and you can’t stomach green juice, then that diet is simply not one you’re going to be able to follow.

  1. Does It Require Numerous Supplements, Cleanses, or Detox Formulas?

Healthy weight loss plans don’t require additional support from numerous supplements or cleanses. If the plan is requiring you to take a copious amounts of supplements or detox powders, it is not very healthy and cannot be sustained for the long-term. Remember, you’re ideally looking for a new way of eating that you can do for a long time. Forgo those diets that require you to buy a bunch of special drinks, pills or powders.

  1. Will it Trigger You?

Some diet plans allow for small indulgences here and there while others are incredibly strict. Are you someone that, if you can’t have a glass of wine with dinner, will become triggered and want to suddenly binge? Are you someone who actually does better with a strict plan?

You’ve really got to know yourself first to select a plan that will work for your personality. While most people can achieve weight loss success with sensible splurging, others require strict guidelines. Choose a plan that fits your personality and will not trigger you.

  1. Does It Call for Small, Gradual Changes?

Some diets require significant changes right up front while others take a “baby step” approach to change. There is no right or wrong, again, it all boils down to your personality and what you are able to follow. Change is difficult for many people, and for these people, a baby step approach may be best. But then again, there are those who like to rip the band aid off, so to speak, and just get the change over with.

Which one are you?

  1. Was it Created by A Doctor or Nutritionist?

Would you let your hairdresser rewire your house? Would you let your mechanic take your child’s tonsils out? Well then why would you trust your health to someone who has zero knowledge of proper nutrition and human anatomy?

It’s important to select a diet plan that is not only effective, but perhaps more importantly, safe to follow. Make sure the plan you choose has been developed by a doctor or nutritionist and that it will still offer your body the nutrition it needs.

Losing weight can be a struggle for most people – that is unless they follow a diet that is sound, safe and aligns with their basic personality traits. Once you choose a diet plan that’s right for you, the weight should easily come off and stay off!
