3 Miracle Ingredients for Joint Health Part II

If you read my last blog post you learned that Boron, Collagen and Selenium are miracle ingredients when it comes to promoting joint health. If you didn’t read it, I suggest doing that now and then coming back to part II.

The Case for Natural Remedies

Before I share the other three ingredients with you, I wanted to speak a little about natural or “alternative” arthritis treatments and how many are moving into mainstream medicine. Alternative treatments for arthritis, or any disease for that matter, have been around for millennia.

While some have little science-based evidence behind them, many, even those that were once scoffed at, have been studied and found to be effective at alleviating the pain and stiffness associated with arthritis. Dr. John H. Klippel, president of the Arthritis Foundation, has said, “Today’s alternative medicine may someday be tomorrow’s mainstream.”

There was a time when acupuncture was considered, in this country, to be a bit “woo-woo” and “out there,” and most doctors were skeptical as to the efficacy of this ancient Eastern health treatment. But acupuncture has become very mainstream, with all sorts of health practitioners advising their patients to incorporate it into their care plan.

For instance, the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM), part of the National Institutes of Health, found that acupuncture does indeed provide pain relief and improves function in those who suffer with osteoarthritis of the knee. Other studies have similarly found acupuncture to be helpful in relieving pain and, because of these studies, acupuncture is increasingly being used as part of arthritis treatment and may one day soon be covered by health insurance.

Glucosamine and Chondroitin were once scoffed at as potential ingredients that could bring relief to arthritis sufferers but have now become mainstream. According to Dr. Klippel, preliminary studies suggest these supplements can relieve osteoarthritis and may even be able to slow down the advance of the disease, a claim that no current prescription medication can make.

These 3 Ingredients May One Day be Found to be Even More Powerful in Preventing Arthritis

The following 3 miraculous ingredients are not new. In fact, you may have two of them in your kitchen right now. But when combined together, and with the three other ingredients I previously mentioned, they create powerful medicine that can not only alleviate the painful symptoms of arthritis, but get to the core issue of the disease.

Someday, I predict these ingredients will completely change how arthritis is treated and prevented. But why wait for some day? Why don’t I tell you what these last 3 ingredients are right NOW:

Boswellia

Boswellia serrata is a beautiful branching tree native to Northern Africa, India and the Middle East. From the trunk is harvested a resin, also known as frankincense, which has been used in religious ceremonies for thousands of years. This resin also contains active components, known as boswellic acids, and clinical trials have shown these active components to have anti-inflammatory properties similar to that of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS). Unlike NSAIDS, however, boswellia acids do not lead to ulceration of the stomach.

In May of 2013, Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database (NMCD) indicated that boswellia extracts “can reduce pain and improve mobility in people with osteoarthritis in joints.” Current research has shown that boswellia has the potential to decrease joint pain by as much as 65%. Animal studies have also shown that boswellia inhibits the production of pro-inflammatory enzymes.

Turmeric

Turmeric is a yellow-colored powder, a common ingredient in curries, which has been ground from the root of the turmeric plant. This lovely flowering plant grows in India and Indonesia and is actually related to ginger.

Turmeric was traditionally used in Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine as an arthritis treatment. How did these ancients know this powder contained the key ingredient (curcumin) that blocks inflammatory cytokines and enzymes? We’ll most likely never know, but modern studies have shown that this curcumin does have anti-inflammatory properties.

A 2010 clinical trial found that a certain turmeric supplement provided long-term benefits to those suffering from knee pain, and a 2012 pilot study found another turmeric product reduced joint pain and swelling better than a popular NSAID.

It should be noted that high doses of turmeric can act as a blood thinner so speak with your doctor if you are already on a blood thinner before supplementation.

Ginger

The next time you are asked “Ginger or Mary Anne?” go for ginger, as Mary Anne can’t help your joints at all. Besides being a delicious spice that makes holiday treats all-the-more delicious and has the ability to settle upset stomachs, studies have shown ginger may help alleviate joint pain and inflammation.

One University of Miami study found ginger extract to have the potential to replace NSAIDS one day. “Research shows that ginger affects certain inflammatory processes at a cellular level,” says the study’s lead author, Roy Altman, MD, now at the University of California, Los Angeles. When it comes to ‘king of spices’, ginger is right up there with boswellia and tumeric!

So now that you know the 6 miraculous ingredients (boron, collagen, selenium, boswellia, turmeric and ginger) that science has shown to be critical in the prevention of and relief from arthritis pain and inflammation, how do you go about making sure you get just the right dosages and ratios on a daily basis WITHOUT having to take a handful of pills every morning?

I’ll tell you how… and you’re going to LOVE IT!
