They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder and in many ways this is true. But when asked what makes someone beautiful, most of us would answer a nice smile, glowing skin and thick, shiny hair, right? If that’s true, then coconut oil can make you more beautiful. Read on to find out how.

You’ve probably already heard about the benefits of coconut oil to our health and may even have a jar sitting in your kitchen cupboard, but coconut oil is also a fantastic beauty product that has been used for thousands of years. This wonder oil can do everything from moisturize skin to eliminate dandruff to whiten teeth and freshen breath.

Here are some of the ways you can incorporate coconut oil into your beauty routine.

Use as a Pre-Shampoo Conditioner

Coconut oil is very beneficial when used as a pre-shampoo scalp conditioner. You can simply massage a little into your scalp and dry hair and leave it in for an hour or so. Some women even leave it in overnight (wear a shower cap to protect your pillow). Then wash your hair and style as usual. This treatment is great for those with dry dandruff and makes hair shiny and soft.

Clean Teeth and a Fresher Mouth

If you want to brush your teeth with a fluoride-free toothpaste but don’t want to pay extra, you can make your own toothpaste by mixing coconut oil and baking soda. Also, coconut oil is great when used in a technique called ‘pulling.’ It has the ability to reduce plaque buildup, which helps promote healthy gums and teeth.

Oil pulling is a practice that can be dated back thousands of years, having its origins in Ayurvedic medicine. The pulling motion in and around the teeth removes plaque and toxins. Plus, the antimicrobial power of coconut oil helps fight bad breath.

Simply take a little oil into your mouth as you would a mouthwash and work it around your mouth, pushing and pulling and swishing it around. Do so for 15 minutes then spit out the oil and rinse well. You’ll instantly notice your teeth will feel cleaner and your breath will smell great.

Oil pulling also has the ability to detoxify your whole body. Candida and Streptococcus live in the mouth and their waste products can contribute to secondary infections in the body as well as chronic inflammation. Oil pulling has the ability to stop the spread of these toxins from your mouth to other parts of your body.

Moisturizer

Unless heated, coconut oil is a smooth solid substance which makes it ideal to scoop a little out of a jar with your fingers and slather all over your body after a bath or shower. The oil is very light and seeps in quickly, so you never feel slick. Also, it leaves a wonderful nutty scent on your skin afterwards. You have the option of combining coconut oil with a few drops of your favorite essential oil like lavender or peppermint if you want another scent on your skin.

Lip Balm

Chapped lips are not only uncomfortable, they look bad as well. Coconut oil is ultra-hydrating on your lips. If you want to make sure you always have coconut oil on you as a lip balm, simply scoop some oil out of your jar and transfer it to an empty contact lens holder.

Coconut oil really helps plump your lips and get rid of those fine lines around the mouth that reveal themselves as we age.

Cuticle Softener

When cuticles become dry they can become painful, especially when they get caught on fabric. Simple rub a little coconut oil on them and let sink in. Applying coconut oil to your hands, cuticles and nails will keep them looking youthful.

Under-Eye Cream

By now you know that the skin under your eyes is extremely delicate and prone to dark circles, puffiness and fine lines, all which make us look older. There is no need to spend a lot of money on fancy under-eye creams when you can just dab a little coconut oil on. Fine lines don’t stand a chance.

Remove Makeup

Many women think they’ve removed all of their makeup at the end of the day, but if they were to look in a magnified mirror, they’d see there is still plenty of residue on their skin. This can cause breakouts and premature aging.

Just a teaspoon of coconut oil can take off every last bit of your makeup while hydrating skin at the same time.

Shaving Cream

Again, there’s simply no reason to spend money on subpar shaving creams when coconut oil does a better job. Simply smooth the oil onto your legs (or face for men) and start shaving. You’ll notice immediately how smoothly the razor glides over your skin. This allows for really close-up shaves. Plus, again, your skin is being beautifully moisturized at the same time. Much better than using soaps and foams that can dry your skin and cause razor bumps.

Easy Ways to get More Coconut Oil into Your Diet and Lifestyle

Here are a few other easy ways you can incorporate coconut oil into your diet and everyday life:

Cook With It

One of the best things about coconut oil (if we had to choose one best out of so many bests) is that it is a very stable oil, which means it doesn’t break down easily at high temperatures like most other oils. This means it’s great for stir fries and deep frying. You can also use it in your baked goods and pretty much any other cooking use.

Blend it in Smoothies

Coconut has a mildly sweet and nutty taste which is great when blended into smoothies. It creates a really lovely creamy texture and makes smoothies extra rich and thick. Plus, it’s a great way to hide all of those important nutrients and healthy fats.

Coconut Mayo

Why buy store-bought mayo when you can make your own by blending coconut oil and olive oil. This powerful combination not only tastes incredible, each serving also has a healthy dose of saturated and monounsaturated fats.
